Coal bed of the Chikuho coal field

Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History

This is a specimen taken from a major coal bed in the Chikuho Coal Field. It includes the fossil of a silicified root of a large tree in the middle. The strata of the Chikuho area approx. 45-30 million years ago (Cenozoic Era, Paleogene Period) often include coal beds, and the coal mined from them played an important role in the modernization of Japan.
