Nogata meteorite (replica)

Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History

This stony meteorite (L6 ordinary chondrite) was found in Nogata City of Fukuoka Prefecture. It reportedly fell on the night of May 19, 861, making it the oldest witnessed meteorite record in the world. This precious replica was created by making a mold of the original meteorite. The original meteorite is open to public viewing at Sugajinja Shrine, the site where it fell, once every five years.
