Common Shelduck

Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History

This large duck can be observed in winter. It is designated as endangered species (VU) on the Red List of the Ministry of the Environment of Japan. The number of wintering individuals in the Sone Tidal Flat has increased since the late 1980s, and the site has become one of the largest wintering spots in Japan. When you visit, you can observe the birds walking on the tidal flat and foraging for food. Although the color of the specimen has been degraded, its beak has a vivid red color.
