This giant salamander was captured in Itabitsu River, and was kept at the former Yahata Junior High School (present-day Yahata High School) until it died, after which it was kept as a specimen there. Although inhabitation of giant salamanders in Fukuoka Prefecture is not currently confirmed, this precious evidence shows that the species was living in Kitakyushu as recently as the 20th century.
