Mawsonia brasiliensis
Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History
Mawsonia is a genus of large coelacanths that lived in Brazil during the Early Cretaceous Period. Five species of the Mawsonia from South America and Africa are known, but most of the specimens have separated skulls and bones. This is the only complete specimen ever found. This is a holotype, which served as a standard to make its scientific name, and therefore a very valuable specimen from an academic viewpoint.
