Wooden the Deva Kings Statues

Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History(History of Kitakyushu (Kamakura Period) )

These are replicas of the Deva Kings statues placed at the temple gate of Daikokuji Temple in Gamo, Kokuraminami-ku. The statue with the open mouth is breathing out, and is called "Agyo." The one with its mouth closed is breathing in, and is called "Ungyo." The two are seen as being in sync with each other in a finely timed manner called aun-no-kokyu. Legend has it that Regent Hojo Tokiyori of the Kamakura Government ordered the construction of Daikokuji Temple.
