Company House of Yawata Steel Works (Reproduction)

Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History(Discovering History (Folklore))

This is the recreation of a typical Yawata Steel Works company house circa 1950. The exhibit introduces the daily lives of people who lived here around 1958, a time when electrical appliances were still rare. Shortly afterwards, the age of rapid development progressed and advanced electrical appliances became commonplace. The house was built without a bath, and people would instead go to a nearby public bath. Later on, many families built baths in their backyards. Company houses made of wood were eventually replaced by reinforced concrete apartments.
